Enchanted by Possibility

It's September! I love this time of year - the weather, the change of pace, the feeling of fresh starts. During the years that I homeschooled my daughters, September marked a return to structure. We had chosen new school books, new readers, new notebooks, fresh pens, perfectly pointed pencils with unused erasers. We were embarking on a brand new year of endless possibility.

Those school days are behind us, but I find myself feeling some of that blank-slate excitement. Maybe that's why I cleaned my desk last weekend. It took an entire day. (It got a lot worse before it got better.) I left no slip of paper un-turned. The grand payoff is that I can now see the welcoming surface of my desk and it's calling to me, as are the notebooks I bought (because with back to school prices, who could resist?)

Yesterday was one of those easy writing days, where the words flow and you can see where your sentences are taking you. I know they won't all be like that, but I also know enough to relish them when they come.

Hope is a renewable option: if you run out of it at the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning." - Barbara Kingsolver

What do you like best about September?

  1. I didn't know you had homeschooled! I'm homeschooling my girls now, and boy do I love a good excuse for loading up on fresh notebooks and pencils. I must confess I bought more than a few for myself as well. :)

  2. I like that it will get cooler and the leaves are turning to red, gold and yellow.

  3. Your post is so sweet! I LOVE the quote you put at the end! You're right, the fall is a wonderful time of year for so many reasons. Appreciate it -- I know I am. :-)

  5. Although it is difficult for me to let go of summer, I do enjoy the newness of the season, and the crisp, invigorating air. Right now, I'm in a season of reading instead of writing, and for some reason, I am feeling guilty about it, tho' I know I shouldn't!

  6. What I like best about September is that October is coming and the weather will cool down. It's still blazing hot here in Texas....

  7. I like that the mums for sale are out now in front of the grocery store. They're so colorful!

  8. Since being a writer means always being a student, I find September feels like the first day of school all over again. I usually start a new project during the fall - this year is no exception!

  9. You give new meaning to Spring Cleaning: Fall ;) Clearing!

And look how well it worked, with an easy writing day. Go, Ruth!

  10. I enjoy September for many of the same reasons! Though my kids too, are past our homeschooling days, I still am tempted to go out and buy school supplies. :) I also love the promise of cooler weather and all things autumn.

  11. At this point (it is in the 90s outside right now!!!), I can *definitely* say that the thing I like best about September is the return of cooler weather. A close second is a return to my writing routine. Although school started almost two weeks ago, things have yet to settle down at my house! Soon, though, I know it will! = )

  12. No one can resist back to school notebooks! I used to love September. Now I live in a climate that doesn't really have fall. I miss the changing leaves, the cool, crisp mornings, the promise of winter on the way. Sigh, now I'm homesick.

  13. Congrats on getting your desk cleaned off! Want to come tackle mine? :)

I always seem to have more energy in the cooler weather. With book launch coming up, there's not much hope the desk will get my attention.

  14. Back to school supplies always get me excited, even though mine are still just too young to head back to anywhere. September always signals the beginning of fall to me, my favorite time of year, even if it's still hot as ever here.

  15. Did you really buy hard back notebooks? They're lovely but I can't bear to write in them, knowing that I will then have to throw them away once my immortal words have been transferred to the computer.

  16. I love September. I love stationery - we did our shop yesterday, and my son had to drag me out of the shop! Best thing about September... that early morning still-air chill. I love it

  17. Here here! Love September! Mainly cuz I get my writing time back while kids are in school. I love doing their school shopping with them and all the new supplies. It takes me back to my school days and that refreshing feeling of a new start. :)

  19. I just love browsing around in the stationary section. When did September creep in?

  20. I also did some cleaning as well as some shopping. As a teacher, there's a lot of prep work and getting to know students and programs. It does feel like a clean slate.

  21. I love, love, love a clean desk and a sense of the clean slate. You would never know it to look at my desk, but cleaning it is on my list of "things to do." You've inspired me.

  22. I love all the fresh new school supplies and the change in the weather. Days are a little cooler and all the new supplies bring me so much happiness. I bought myself some supplies at the "Back to School" sales- even though I am not going back to school. :) A clean desk is SO rewarding. Happy September!

  23. I love the fresh beginning - and the fresh weather - in September. And I really like that quote!

  24. It's been raining a lot in Singapore since September began. I love rain. We don't really witness tree leaves changing colours here (pity), but I've always enjoyed the concept of taking a breather in September before we ease into year-end. Like cleaning up your desk, it is an intermission towards a fresh breath of the next step for me.

  25. I love the fall, but my eye always starts twitching as if forwarning me of the end of the year. Must be about change, although I really don't mind change and letting go of the old so something new can come forth. Perhaps that's why I love the spring. Lovely post. It's hard having WP and many of my friends on Blogspot. I'm not good at checking.

  26. I live in Southern California, so weather-wise, things don't really change around here until November or so, but I like the idea of fall.

  27. My favorite thing about September is apples! I also love that it still looks like summer but cools down to maybe 70 degrees or so. Hopefully neither way hotter nor way colder.

  28. Nice post, great blog, following :)

    Good Luck :)

  29. Its a little sad that summer is ending, especially as it has been so good this year in the UK...
However, I love Autumn, the trees changing colour, and new beginnings! Time to browse for a new notebook at the stationers, and maybe start learning something different.

Not keen on the darker evenings, and having to chop wood for the burner, but it'll soon pass, and before we know it we'll be watching Spring unfold...

  30. I used to love September because school was starting and that meant I would get some new outfits! But since that was a lonnnnngggggg time ago, I now love September because I know the cooler weather is coming and so are the holidays.

  31. Towards the end of my teaching career September made my stomach clench at the thought of all that hard work ahead of me. Now there's little shape to the months except those carved out by the changing seasons. The nights are drawing in and I've just sorted the heating controls so that we get some background heat in this shivery house. Yes, September still represents change.

  32. I am actually not a big fan of September. It's a warning of the winter to come. If I have to pick something, it is that I am back on a regular schedule with the kids back in school. I'm never happy the kids are back in school, but I am happy to be back in a semblance of order. I can get more done that way.
