Buried Treasure & A Book Giveaway

The unexpected reward I received for tidying up my desk today was uncovering a slim paperback titled “We Really Do Need Each Other,” by Reuben Welch. I think I picked this up as a library discard years ago. It’s a tiny 160 pages of truth about the ways human beings connect.

Tomorrow I’m taking my mother to an appointment where the time spent in the waiting room is never under an hour and a half. Instead of getting upset about the wait, tomorrow I’m going to feed my spirit with these words.

What do you do to nurture yourself throughout the week?

YA and MG Book Giveaway

In celebration of my daughter launching her brand new book blog, I'm holding a giveaway. Up for grabs are three books: one of Amanda's favorite YA books, Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky

One of my favorite YA books,The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

And a MG book we both absolutely adore, A Crooked Kind of Perfect by Lisa Urban

  1. I love those kinds of surprises, finding something like this that was misplaced. And a doctor's office is a great place for reading and helps to pass the time. I like to read during the week for nurturing. So relaxing at the end of a busy day.

How cool that your daughter started a blog! I haven't read any of those books yet, so count me in. I'm going to her blog to sign up now!

Also, so cool that your daughter started a blog! I'm off to check it out. I'll let someone else have the giveaway books, though! ;-)

  5. Those doctor appointments with my mom give me the same block of time. I so understand that hour to hour and a half. Lovely book to have along.

  8. Hi Ruth, I'm enjoying your blog. You're doing a great job with it. I'm sorry that I don't 'follow' any blogs, so I'm not trying to enter your contest. But I did want to tell anybody who's considering entering it that I agree with you and your daughter about A CROOKED KIND OF PERFECT. It's delightful!

    Happy day to you! Ev

  9. Hi Ruth! I'm a follower of both you and your daughter's blog. Great choice in giveaway books, BTW. I loved Crooked and The Book Thief. Enjoy your reading time tomorrow. It's so important to know how to nurture ourselves. Reading does it for me, too. So does a sprinkle donut, coffee, and the morning paper! =)

  14. Hi Ruth. I came here through Samantha's blog and the Platform Campaign. You've given me an incentive to clean my own desk, seeking buried treasure. You asked the question "What do you do to nurture yourself during the week?" It's a tough question. I have to ask myself constantly. I've been seeing my doctor about a series of ailments and on one visit her prescription was "take 30 minutes for yourself every day." It's hard to do, but she's right.

  15. Cool! Congrats to your daughter and I will definitely follow here. Please enter me in the giveaway. Now let me go and put something on my own blog about this. Great giveaways by the way!

  16. I hope your mother's appointment went well! Each week is different, but a good story can really pull me through when I need a pick-me-up (it can be a book/movie/TV show, as long as it's a story that takes me out of reality). Your daughter's new book blog looks great. I've followed her and left a comment, and I've followed you too :) Please enter me in the contest, and thanks for having it!

  17. Hi Lyn, I agree, reading is the best way to pass the time in waiting rooms. I usually keep a book and a few magazines in my car so I'll always have something with me that I'm really interested in reading.

Kelly, thanks for participating in the contest and thanks again for the award!

Crystal, her appointment did go well. Thanks!

Dafeenah, yes, I love rereading a good book. You always get something new out of it depending on where you are in your own life.

    C. Lee, We usually turn those doctor appointments into little outings - going out to eat afterwards or getting her hair done while we're out. It easily turns into half the day.

Terrie, Thanks again for mentioning the contest on your blog!

Ev, Thanks so much for stopping by. Linda Urban has a new book coming out soon - we can't wait.

Dawn, oh if you're going to bring up food, then I vote for chocolate peanut butter ice cream!

Kelly, You are going to love The Book Thief. Thanks for stopping by.

Cat, Yay! thanks for participating and for blogging about the contest!

Hi Julie. Did you uncover any treasure? Hope so. Your doctor is so right. Even ten minutes can make a difference. I stopped at the beach on my way home, just long enough to slip off my shoes and put my feet in the water.

Allyn, thanks for entering and passing along the word on your blog.

Stephanie, glad to see you here. Thanks for entering. I agree, a good story can be a great break from reality. My mother watches Judging Amy every afternoon while I'm at her house. Now she's gotten me wrapped up in it too.

  21. Wow... I never find anything useful when I clean my bio-hazard of a desk. Mostly just long lost sandwiches or hair-clips that have been forgotten...and maybe the occasionally rare research paper that ran away with my lucky paperclip.

Congratulations to your daughter starting her new blog! Also, thank you so much for the birthday wish! I regret that I only got to eat one piece of the cake....but I don't think I needed anymore than that. However, I'm still on the hunt for the thief ^_^. Also, I'm glad you liked the songs. The one by Karmina is slowly taking a hold of the number one slot on my songs list.
