What Blizzards are Good For

I can't attribute all of my recent reads to the weather, but getting snowed in for a day does go a long way towards hours of guilt-free reading. And I've enjoyed a run of five-star reads.

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
brought chills, tears, and goosebumps,
all in turn. An amazing love story!

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
takes you to the wilds of the Amazon.
My thoughts returned there to ponder
the story and characters long after I'd
finished the last page.

I Will Save You by Matt De La Pena
is chilling, shocking, and impossible to
put down. I finished it within two days
and couldn't request his next book (or
two, or three) soon enough.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.
Okay, I haven't finished this one yet, so I guess the rating is premature. I'm 75 % into it, but as I look at my schedule for the next few days, all I can think about is
finding time to read more of this book. I would possibly forego meals to continue reading this one. (My family may not be on board with that plan.)

I love book recommendations! What was your last five-star read?

  1. I am nearly at the end of Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult and still can't guess the ending - quite. It's a very absorbing read.

  2. Books that you'd forego meals for are special. :-) I've been known to "cook" (which really means absentmindedly stir something in a pot) while reading a book I can't put down.

  3. I really enjoyed THESE BROKEN STARS--definitely a book that's stuck with me. I haven't read the others, but I'll have to check them out!

  4. I guess I need a blizzard to read that many... I'm a slow reader.
I loved Waxing Moon by H. S. Kim, set in 19th century Korea. I also re-read Life of Pi, which I really like.

  5. A run of 5 star books! Woo hoo! That's great! The last 5 star book I read was The Maze Runner. And just before that, Ender's Game. I haven't blogged for four months. You know how life stuff can throw things off? Hoping to get back to it this week. Daughter is here watching the grand babies for me while I get a little bit of work done. Have a great week, Ruth! (Darn, wish I didn't have to leave a comment under my Google account, but it won't take my new Wordpress info. Keeps kicking me back to the old Wordpress!)

  6. I think I rated King's Cell five-star. That was the last book I read for pleasure - and it was a pleasure! I'm reading his The Dark Half now, but not liking it very much. He "tells" a lot and head-hops! But I guess if you're a super-star author, you can break rules and no one cares. Except I do 'coz those rules are really fundamental...

  7. Oh wow! These all look great, Ruth! I haven't been doing enough reading lately. The last book I read was a Jack Reacher novel which gets 5 stars just by virtue of being Jack Reacher :)

  8. We're on our 6th snow day this month so I've had much downtime to read! I've started Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell and it's as excellent as everyone has said it is! I've also had Matt de la Pena on my radar for awhile, but have yet to read anything of his.

  10. I heard Matt De La Pena speak at a conference, and he was great. I intend to read his writing.

    Stay warm, Ruth.

  11. Thanks for the recommendations! We might be getting snow tonight (almost unheard of in Georgia) and they've already closed school early today.

  14. I haven't read any of these, so it was great to read these reviews! Sounds like you have been reading a lot of fantastic books! I really want to read I Will Save You based on what you had to say. Thanks for sharing! :)

  15. I'm in the middle of a very thick non-fiction on the 14th Century. I need less snow days to finish that one. My kids have been home more this new year than at school. Those books look good. Thanks for the ideas.

  16. I agree 100 percent. The cold is a great excuse to red for pleasure. Great shares. The State of Wonder really grabs my attention. I'v been reading Kathleen Fuller's Amish books -- always a great escape.

  19. I don't experience snow, but I do get a lot of reading done when it rains.

These all look good and I particularly have my eye on the last two.

  20. I've had a few five-star reads lately. I really loved This is How You Lose Her, by Junot Diaz, but my favourite was If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things. Truly remarkable.
